Earthquake in California! Received a response to my email from Steve Shaw so far.
Hi Rose, Leatrice, Jack and Anne,
Everything is fine at our house. We, my partner Kum Mo and I, live about
70 miles from the center of the real damage. At 3:30 this morning, I was
awakened by a severe shaking of the house and everything in it. It continued
past the usual five to ten seconds, and that led me to nudge Kum Mo, who
otherwise, I guess, would have slept through it, saying to her: “This looks
like a serious one.” It continued on for about fifteen or so seconds more,
although not timing it, it’s hard to tell.
If you’ve never been through a
quake, I can tell you that time extends in one’s perception so that 25 seconds
feels like 25 minutes. Napa City, close to the epicenter, got walloped, with
sever injuries to people and damage to buildings, as well as fires, enough so
that the governor called a state of emergency.
It wasn’t the Big One, which
we’re told to expect someday, but it was enough to rattle everything, including
our sense of well-being.
Here’s a piece from the NY Times:

Great Shares From: Anne Farrell Anderson!
Rose,
You are the best! 70??????? Hope all is well with you. We are being kept
very busy with this house we moved into last September. Sold our 2-story for a
single. It needed work inside and out. We have been working on the out.
I’ll
tell you a brief story. The yard has a enormous Canary Date Palm. They need
water. It was not watered properly so it sent roots into the grass area on one
side of the yard killing the grass. Jack decided to dig up the dead grass.
It
was a Sunday morning and I had to run a couple of errands. When I was leaving I
went to tell Jack. He was bent over with this short handled pick or whatever
digging up the grass.
He has a back problem so I told him to stop it isn’t
worth it, we will have Jesus, our gardner, do it. He told me no that he can do
it. So, I went on my way.
About 30 minutes later I get a text, “need beer”. I
didn’t answer because I didn’t want to be pressured into coming home. I had
things to do.
Another 30 min went by and another text, “union rules state 30
minute beer break”. I didn’t respond. A few minutes later another text, “forget
the beer, bring a casket”.
Hilarious!!! So, I got him his beer and went home.
We are hoping to go to the next brunch. What are your plans? Oh, and my
birthdate is the 8th. LOL
Thanks for all you do. You have kept us together.
Anne
