Hi. How are you? I got one for you and the "gang."
As the baseball season winds down and the Red Sox are looking good, again.
Moxie was my father's favorite drink--I think it came from Worcester. I remember drinking it as a kid. Does anyone else remember Moxie?
Richard Cummings
Hi Rich,
ReplyDeleteYes, I do remember Moxie! Curious, do they still sell it? I, no longer drink sodas of any kind, so I never even walk through that isle in the grocery stores.
I'm sure someone may know.
Hugs, Rose (Franciosa) Sisti
Hi Rich,
ReplyDeleteWell, I have been called an "odd duck" many times because I, in fact, actually LIKE Moxie! I have liked it ever since my Dad introduced me to it (ever so many years ago). I also like Campari and soda, which is another acquired taste and which I find equally, similarly (because of its "different", slightly bitter taste) enjoyable. I think Moxie is made from gentian root. . .
And yes, they do still make it and it is still available. I buy it at my local supermarket (Hannaford, out of Maine) and I believe it was first made in Lowell, MA.
Hope all is well with you!
Meri

ReplyDeleteMoxie! I can't believe that there are others besides me, who still remember it and like it! I have liked it since I was a young child. My grandmother always had it at her house and it was quite a treat for me to enjoy it with her on occasion. Looking back, I wonder if I really liked the "taste" or the special time spent with her! I still get a "hankering" for it once in a while and will buy it. Mike wants no part of it and commented that it is bad enough that I buy and drink Moxie, but that it is Diet Moxie!
ReplyDeleteWell, on my next trip to the market, I will be purchasing some.
One of our trips this summer was to Vermont where we stopped by the birthplace of President Calvin Coolidge, in Plymouth Notch, Vermont. The entire village is a State Historic Site and includes the birthplace, boyhood home, and grave of President Coolidge. It also has several other historical buildings, some which are The One-Room Schoolhouse, The Coolidge Homestead, Coolidge Hall (the summer White House office in 1924), The Union Christian Church (1840) and a General Store. The General Store was chock full of Moxie, which was for sale!
I also remember from many, many years ago that Clark's Trading Post (with the trained bears) in NH held a Moxie Festival for several years. We used to summer in NH with our boys, but never did attend that event. The promotions for it always caught my eye and the fact that there was such an event still amazes me.So, I guess there are more fans of Moxie than those of us from our little corner of the world expected!
I am so glad that The Lantern has continued. It is so good to hear about former classmates and fun to remember the "good old days!"
Be well and keep writing!

I got real curious about Moxie after reading Joanne's recent comment so I naturally did some research online....go to http://www.moxie-soda.com/ You will be amazed!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know Boston had "Moxieland" did you? After you go into this site....scroll down to "Promotion, Promotion, Promotion" and view this amazing story about this product.

Its hard to believe that anyone liked Moxie. I liked it but only
ReplyDeleteafter they came out with a sweetened version. It was a different
drink and older people said it was used for medicinal purposes
years ago. I still see it sometimes, and wonder how ong it will
last as its not a favorite of many young people, if any.
After we would play sports games at Hill Park or the tennis
courts, we used to go to Pandolfo s Drug Store and everyone
would drink Coke. I would ask for Moxie. The soda jerk always had
a bottle just for me and said I was the only one that would
ask for it. From the above comments, I guess I was not alone.

Thanks a lot for the comments. Next time I am in the greater Boston area, I will search around for a can or two to re-acquaint my taste buds to Moxie--not sure how I will react to after all these years. In the two drugstores on Broadway I frequented, I would always get a shot of something with my Coca Cola (decided against using the word Coke). I get to "watch" Red Sox games on mlb.com...there is a graphics display with each pitch. Not the same as being in Fenway Park with my trusty baseball glove sitting in the bleaches waiting for Ted to hit one out...anyway, go Red Sox. Regards to all. Rich
