Halloween was always fun when I was growing it. My sister and I would dress as Gipsies. That would mean big skirts , huge belts, big blouses. A ton of jewelry and the best of all lipstick and rough. ! Lots of it. Of course this was the 50's so it was easy to come up with the clothes we just had to raid the oldest sister and cousins closets...My brother always went as a Hobo. He wore my fathers old clothes and hat and he used the ashes from the coal furnace. We spent the entire day helping my mother wrap candy in napkins and twisting them tight for all the trick-or-treaters....This was Halloween Roxbury style. Now I buy bags of candy bars and keep watching the clock to see when this will all end.....LOL
Well Dora, being a gypsy or a hobo must have been the "in" thing back then. I think I was a gypsy every year, probably because I loved the whole make-up and earrings aspect. I always wore this black shawl that had really long fringe. Now I try every excuse not to be home when it's time for the "trick or treaters", or hope that it rains so no one will come. "bah, Humbug!"
Oh gosh, I forgot about the scarf and the the bright kerchiefs we would wrap around our head. My husband loves to see the trick or treaters.....for the first hour! I think it should only be allowed to run from 6 to 8 that is it.
I love Halloween! Though not my favorite holiday, it's up close to the top. Well, I look forward to seeing the little gremlins, princesses, witches, pumpkins and whatever-is-popular-this-year-from-Disney, etc., (some parents are so creative and I enjoy seeing the different costumes). I get a kick out of seeing the kids coming up the driveway, giggling and running into each other and being excited, then ringing the bell and saying "Trick or Treat" and me opening the door in MY witch costume--complete with a long, blonde wig, green make-up, my centuries-old black cape and tall, pointy hat--because it's fun and makes me smile. I love giving out the candy to the neighborhood children who "are getting so big" so I have to say "wow, how old are you now" It's yet another way to mark the passage of time. . . And we get to eat any left-over KitKats! What's better than that?
Merrie, Reeces peanut butter cups are my downfall.... We use to play all the Halloween music and sounds so as the kids walk up the path they are greeted by it. I too am amazed at how good they dress these days....
I guess it is still clearly marked in my brain my displeasure of Halloween and won't go away.
When my children were very young, my son was about 3 years old and was so excited to hand out the candy at the door after I had taken my children out earlier to the local Library that had a Halloween party.
Well, within a blink of an eye, as I was attending to my daughter who was younger, some idiot teenager grabbed the entire bowl of candy from my son and took off. Leaving my poor son crying hysterically.
Then another Halloween when my children were teenagers......I spent the evening at the ER as some teenage boy pushed my daughter through a chain link fence and blood gushing from her head.
I have always loved Halloween. As a young girl and now as an adult. When I lived in Revere all the kids loved coming to my grandmothers house. She would bake the best cupcakes and cookies for all the kids in the neighborhood. Of course that is something that cannot be done anymore everyone would be afraid of what might be in them. Sad. I really enjoy seeing the kids in my neighborhood each year expecially the real little ones. The costumes are very elaborate now. The city has lots of parties for thed kids but we still get kids from our neighborhood. Even some of the teenagers dress up. What amazes me is that they are all so polite. I will be stocking up on candy soon, but not too soon I don't want to be dipping into those bags. Well, maybe just one of two of those small candy bars. LOL Janice
I started disliking Hallowe'en when I would see carloads of parents (from other towns) dropping kids off in my neighborhood because they thought the pickings were better here than where they lived.
Also, the store-bought costumes are kind of a turn-off. It was so much more fun when kids and parents would put together "interesting" old things to go out trick or treating. My son was Dracula for years and he wore a cape that was really an old long black skirt of mine that I cut up and glued (I can't sew). And my daughter was Batman (Batgirl) with tights and a turtleneck with a Bat symbol glued on that I made from black and yellow felt. Going to Walmart and buying a plastic costume just isn't right!!!
Who has a great Halloween story?
ReplyDeleteI, personally never liked Halloween.....still don't come to think of it! LOL
Hugs, Rose

No Trick or Treaters here at my Condo. The kids today go to parties at the Fire Department and other Community Centers which is safer I think.

So, I really hate Halloween!
I never liked it as a child either.
