In the News today: President Barack Obama!

Barack Obama
Succeeding: George W. Bush

Took office January 20, 2009, 12:00 Noon EST
Vice President, Joe Biden

Yesterday was extraordinary day in the life of America, people of all colors and ages waited for hours in frigid temperatures to witness a young black man with a foreign-sounding name take command of a nation founded by slaveholders. It was a scene I watched in fascination and glued to my TV along with many millions — perhaps billions — around the world. America certainly changed the tide of history!

  1. Well, yesterday certainly changed the tide in history!

I thought I would never experience a black man as our President. I think he is a very intelligent man and I pray and hope the change that we need in America will be forthcoming.

  2. I have to say that I, too, am optimistic about our new president. I was thrilled to watch the ceremony yesterday and often found myself in tears as I listened to the prayers and speeches and viewed the incredible masses of people who made the effort to attend the inauguration.

Barack Obama is, I believe, not only intelligent and extremely well-educated, but also very hard-working and deeply committed to making our country better. He started working for the "common good" in the relatively small South Side of Chicago and has progressed to working for the whole country.

I like his values and his ideals and I pray that he is able to follow his dream of a "better America". . . where we indeed are really "one".

It resonates with me, this idea, because I was a teacher in the inner-city of Washington, D.C. for ten years, from l967 to l977, and saw the horrible results of segregation and divisiveness and impoverishment and "cultural-deprivation". I was there during the riots of "68 and feared for my life. What a terrible time it was!

I am so hopeful that things will improve there in the nation's Capitol as well as in other inner-cities across the nation as a result of Barack and Michelle Obama's continuing commitment to change, especially in the black community.

His being President can only make things better for everyone, especially the large underclass of poor, misguided, discouraged and hopeless Americans. And good riddance to the outgoing President!
