"Believe it or not, we’ve been watching television commercials for nearly 70 years. Some have made us laugh. Some have made us cry. A few have even encouraged us to go out and buy something. And many TV ads have entered popular culture, influencing in ways unexpected by advertisers. Though you won’t see many of these ads on TV anytime soon, you can see them on iTunes U thanks to Duke University and its AdViews.."

I just saw a 1957 Studebaker car ad. I want one. What a beautiful car ( know it is all relative).
Take care. Rich
Rich,
Found a 1957 Studebaker Golden Hawk for you in a postage stamp! Hugs, Rose

Thank you, Rose. That is exactly the one...A GOLDEN HAWK. Even the name stands out from the others. I remember the AVANTI. made by Studebaker that was years ahead of its time. The company died a glorious death.

Wow what a car.....Love it.
ReplyDeleteI can't help but bring up Shelly Berman again. His album (yes big record album) about television advertising keeps coming to mind. I can still hear him "DON'T LET ROMANCE FADE FADE FADE AWAY , HELL IN CASE OF WAR WE WANT YOU ON THE FRONT LINE". This was about advertising some mouth wash where a woman breaths on a man and he dissappears complettly.....
Dora,
ReplyDeleteI don't remember that TV AD for mouthwash!
Rich, You would know this or even Sal, But back in high school was it not common for the guys to work a lot on their cars? I seem to also remember on Sat. and Sun. you would almost always see a few cars parked under the underpasses and the guys were out there polishing their cars. That was when you got your licence for driving either a "stick" or "slush"
ReplyDeleteMost guys got the "stick" licence.
Rose, The girl walked up to her boyfriend and just as they got close he would dissapear. If I am right they were in some field or something. She was wearing a dress ! I have no idea why I remember all of that but I do. I guess I thought it was funny, even more so after I heard that Shelly Berman record. Gee I wonder if I still have it... I had a bunch of albums stashed away.
ReplyDeleteDora,
ReplyDelete"Stick" or "Slush"???? I've heard of a stick shift of course and are your referring to the automatic a slush? If so, gosh with five brothers and four sisters, you'd think I would have heard this before! LOL
Rose,
ReplyDeleteOh yes, in the advertisement , a voice in the backround said don't let romance fade, fade ,fade away bla bla bla . Shelly Berman added the "hell in case of war we want you on the front lines"

Rose, It was either Steve Holloway or Joe Adinolfi that taught me that. A slush was for an automatic because it did not have the go to power that the standard/stick had. I always thought that was cool, "stick or slush".....
ReplyDeletefound two ads for the original 1957 Studebaker Golden Hawk--$40,000 and counting. From one ad... "punching up its performance to 275 horsepower with a belt driven McCulloch centrifugal supercharger, the same basic engine setup that would go on to be so successful and set speed records in the Avanti." 275 horse power??? My Audi A3 has only 125 horse power.

Rich,
ReplyDeleteI wonder if Leno has one in his"garage". He has an amazing collection of cars. I went on his web site to see what he was talking about a while ago. If it is not in there , he is looking. I can't remember what I googled but I think it may have been just been Jay Leno's garage. You may find his site intresting...
