GREAT STRIDES - In Memory of Ronan James McCarthy.

Dear Friends,

GREAT STRIDES is the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s largest and most successful national fundraising event. This year, we are walking in the GREAT STRIDES walk at the 2010 Wakefield – Town Common at Lake Quannapowitt on May 15, 2010 at 9:30 AM in memory of our beloved grandson, Ronan James McCarthy.

Ronan and his family received outstanding care and support during his too short life at the CF Pulmonary Clinic at Children’s Hospital Orange County California. His bravery, engaging personality, and loving heart, have left an indelible mark on all those who met him and knew him. As a family, we supported the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in the pursuit of a cure and in their work to enable CF patients a continually improve their quality of life. We had such high hopes for a cure to be found in Ronan’s lifetime. Sadly, we lost Ronan on December 19, 2008 at the age of 3. We continue to support this most worthy organization as Team Star Striders, named for Ronan as he was and is our family’s shining “star”. Please help us to meet our fundraising goal by sponsoring us. Your generous donation will be used efficiently and effectively, as nearly 90 cents of every dollar of revenue raised is available for investment in vital CF programs to support research, care and education.

Making a donation is easy and secure! Just click the “Click to Donate” button on my personal page at http://www.cff.org/Great_Strides/JoanneMcCarthy6539   to make a donation that will be credited to my team. Any amount you can donate is greatly appreciated!

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a devastating genetic disease that affects tens of thousands of children and young adults in the United States. Research and care supported by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is making a huge difference in extending the quality of life for those with CF. However, we continue to lose precious lives to CF everyday. That’s why your help is needed now more than ever to ensure that a cure is found sooner - rather than later.

Together we can make a difference in the lives of those with CF! Thank you for supporting the mission of the CF Foundation and GREAT STRIDES.

Sincerely,

Joanne (Straz) and Michael McCarthy

Tips for Handling Telemarketers shared by Joanne Straz McCarthy

Three Little Words That Work !!

(1)The three little words are: 'Hold On, Please...'
Saying this, while putting down your phone and walking off (instead of hanging-up immediately) would make each telemarketing call so much more time-consuming that boiler room sales would grind to a halt.

Then when you eventually hear the phone company's 'beep-beep-beep' tone, you know it's time to go back and hang up your handset, which has efficiently completed its task.

These three little words will help eliminate telephone soliciting.
(2) Do you ever get those annoying phone calls with no one on the other end?
This is a telemarketing technique where a machine makes phone calls and records the time of day when a person answers the phone.

This technique is used to determine the best time of day for a 'real' sales person to call back and get someone at home.

What you can do after answering, if you notice there is no one there, is to immediately start hitting your # button on the phone, 6 or 7 times, as quickly as possible This confuses the machine that dialed the call and it kicks your number out of their system. Gosh, what a shame not to have your name in their system any longer !!!

(3) Junk Mail Help:
When you get 'ads' enclosed with your phone or utility bill, return these 'ads' with your payment.. Let the sending companies throw their own junk mail away.

When you get those 'pre-approved' letters in the mail for everything from credit cards to 2nd mortgages and similar type junk, do not throw away the return envelope.

Most of these come with postage-paid return envelopes, right? It costs them more than the regular 44 cents postage 'IF' and when they receive them back..

It costs them nothing if you throw them away! The postage was around 50 cents before the last increase and it is according to the weight. In that case, why not get rid of some of your other junk mail and put it in these cool little, postage-paid return envelopes.

One of Andy Rooney's (60 minutes) ideas:
Send an ad for your local chimney cleaner to American Express. Send a pizza coupon to Citibank. If you didn't get anything else that day, then just send them their blank application back!

If you want to remain anonymous, just make sure your name isn't on anything you send them.  You can even send the envelope back empty if you want to just to keep them guessing! It still costs them 41 cents.

The banks and credit card companies are currently getting a lot of their own junk back in the mail, but folks, we need to OVERWHELM them. Let's let them know what it's like to get lots of junk mail, and best of all they're paying for it...Twice!

Let's help keep our postal service busy since they are saying that e-mail is cutting into their business profits, and that's why they need to increase postage costs again You get the idea !

Leaving high school can be hard on a friendship. Some friends will drift away because of distance and new interests. But RHS friends are priceless. It was great to get together with Barbara (Cohen) Waldman and her husband, Steve today!

It was wonderful sharing stories since 1962! Yikes, that was the last time we saw each other was graduation day-48 years ago!

It was a feel good day! Looking forward to doing it again knowing where we can find each other now............thanks Barbara & Steve for a fabulous lunch! Sorry Jeanine & Joe couldn't join us today as planned.

Jeanine, Diane & Rose - Lunch in Florida! Fifth Avenue Grill

"Remember When...?"

What a beautiful day reminiscing and sharing with dear friends over lunch discussing a collection of pleasant experiences, past accomplishments, and triumphs over adversity....Wow what a great recipe of true friendship! We did this as sorority sisters and are still sharing close to sixty years later! This is beautiful.

I'm blessed having my Revere friends taking the time to see me whenever they are in Florida on vacation. It makes me feel so special.

We are Forever Friends!

Days of Future Magnolia Blossoms by Rich (Anon)

Springtime
Hi Rose,

The weather was nice again this morning, so I went for a pleasant walk in the park.  I found this magnolia tree that is just beginning to show life, again.  So, naturally, I took some photos.  Hope you like them.

Ciao for now. Rich

Great Sends from Richard (Anon)

Hello Rose.

After the relatively long and cold Winter, there are signs that Spring is around the corner, at least here in Düsseldorf. Today, while walking in the sun, I spotted the first colors of Spring and just had to photograph the small crocuses trying to show off their glory after a frost-filled night.

Hope you like the photos. Take care. Rich
