Boston Red Sox

Befitting the way the Red Sox battled all season long, they still had a chance at Sunday night's Game 7 of the American League Championship Series.

As Dustin Pedroia put it, the Red Sox ran out of "magic," losing to the Rays by a score of 3-1 in a tense, riveting contest. Just like that, the Red Sox saw their chances of becoming baseball's first repeat World Series champions since the Yankees -- who won three in a row from 1998-2000 -- come to an end. Sad day in Boston.

The Lantern PhotoShop Updates

Richard requested that I erase his previous album....he said "out with the old and in with the new". Well, that nearly broke my heart! His photography is so beautiful. He thought 10 photos would be plenty.

I started to erase his previous Album that I created for him on the Lantern and just could not click on the "delete" button, as I enjoy viewing those beautiful pictures. Ugh!

Well, I had to abide by his request. I did add two new photos that Richard sent to me today that are spectacular! I left 10 photos standing on the sight. Whenever he sends me a new photo, I will remove an old one to keep the count to 10. So, scroll down and take a peak at Richard's updated album or for a faster view...look to the sidebar and click on "The Lantern PhotoShop-Richard Cummings".

I added the Subscribe to: Posts and/or Comments to the sidebar. I realized that some classmates still leave comments on older Entries (this site calls them Posts) Maybe this will help out some of us. It will leave a message to your GMail account or your Yahoo account. Sorry for the rest of us but I will add whatever will help some and all.

As I said......I miss AOL Alerts button that notified you if a new entry was made or someone just left a comment. It was a cool feature.

FYI, Dora left a comment on the Entry "Sal the Actor" featured in the month of July. You can go there by the sidebar archives.

Boston Ballroom Cont.

Well, this Boston Ballroom topic is arousing many questions and interests by our classmates. Since my last entry and inquiry, John Henry emailed me and suggested that I contact Roger Ferullo and provided a contact number. Thank you John for your input!

Roger returned my call and we had a delightful conversation. OMIG….Roger danced on Boston Ballroom for 5 years! He stated he made attempts to contact the station years ago but with no luck…………….that was before computers and UTube, etc.

I have been researching for the past two hours with the leads that Roger provided: It was WHDH TV, Channel 7 and Bob Clayton was the host.

The following is the information I have accumulated so far:

Radio personality Bob Clayton's perforated ear drums kept him out of World War II, but not out of people's homes.

Mr. Clayton, who died Monday in Burlington at age 87, was a married lawyer with a newborn child in 1942, when disc jockeys were in short supply because of the draft. Mr. Clayton hoped a new career spinning records would prove more lucrative than his work at a number of struggling law practices. It did.

Mr. Clayton, a Boston native who graduated from Boston Latin School and Northeastern University Law School, became one of Boston's most well-known radio personalities. At Boston's WHDH, he hosted "Boston Ballroom," which featured the most popular music of the day.

I continued to search the Internet for more information. I’m determined to try to get a hold of those TV tapes for The Lantern! Oh my…….wouldn’t that be wonderful!

I did write a letter to the Station, I emailed the Station, I wrote letters to Mr. Clayton’s family for assistance, I even wrote an email to The Boston Globe.

Dora……….look what you started with that simple question about Boston Ballroom! LOL

Roger…….it was a pleasure speaking with you today and thank you for all you help. I’m thinking positive and hoping we can watch you glide across the ballroom dance floor once again! And, seeing Meri wearing the jacket borrowed from Janet.....dancing with Ronnie Lanza and Me too and still can't remember who my dance partner was....Ah yes and also Joe White and Steve Holloway! A special hello to your wife, Mary Martino!

Do you remember Boston Ballroom?

I received an email from Dora (DiBartolomeo) Vickery and her memory just amazes me. She asked me if I remembered the Boston Ballroom when some of us Revere High School classmates were on TV.

I replied........I do remember because I was on the Boston Ballroom TV but I can't remember who my dancing partner was..........hmmmm!

The subject was renting space in my head and I sent off an email to Meri and she certainly remembered more....here is her response: I love the new Blog. . .and yes, I do remember Boston Ballroom because I went on it and danced with Ronnie Lanza! I also remember what I wore (I had borrowed a blue-and-white herringbone jacket from Janet Campello, my best pal, and thought I looked cool until I saw myself on the camera and realized I just looked schoolgirlish. . .which is what I was) But it was so much fun! I remember Skippy Barone and oh, I just blanked on the other boy's name who was also a great dancer, and what a good time it was. Maybe it was Channel 4, WNAC-TV, perhaps?

Dora's request is to ask the entire class what they remember. So, please leave a comment or email me what you remember and I will post it online for you! I searched all over the web and in UTube trying to find some tidbit about Revere High at Boston Ballroom on TV but no luck. So, what better way than to ask all of you...........

Hey, John Henry........you know everything about Revere High...........would you know where I could get a copy of this TV tape when our class was on. Wouldn't that be a hoot to put that on the Lantern!

P.S. I also need more email addresses of our classmates.....I know I don't have Janet Campello's and many others........so if you see our friends.....and have their email addresses.......please send them to me so they can enjoy The Lantern!

Excerpt from Financial Times Newspaper:

I started with Rich Cummings, former director of security for RFE/RL. He had joined the radio stations’ Munich headquarters just months before Carlos the Jackal, funded by the Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu, bombed the building, and he recalled the early years of his tenure as deadly serious, with constant worries about infiltration by spies. He also reminded me that the stations themselves were a microcosm of the internal dynamics of the cold war: many of the various nationalities who worked there had almost as much dislike for one another as they did for communism. In one memorable event, two staffers who had been doing some hard drinking in the headquarters canteen let their nationalist passions escalate into a fight in which one man put his cigarette out on the other’s forehead. In retaliation, the branded man bit off his opponent’s finger.

Cummings, who still lives in Germany, continues to delve into the history of the cold war. His book, Cold War Radio, is scheduled for publication next year. I asked him if he thought the US had won it. “I think the objectives that I read from the CIA in the late 1940s and the state department in 1949 to 1950 were reached with the final fall of communism in Russia in 1991. It doesn’t mean we won. It means that [we met] the objectives, and those were simply to give the people [of the eastern bloc] a chance to do what they wanted to do. But, did we win? I don’t think we, meaning America, really won anything.”

I spent a pleasant evening going through the older entries. You have quite the journals going. It was real nice to read the comments. I have responded under the comments but I am not too sure exactly how I did it on either the Roses are Read or the Lantern. I will keep at it though, you will probably be hearing from me one of these when I am stuck and have the time to get a phone lesson from you. LOL !

I really am enjoying this more than I ever thought I would.

It was so nice to see Sal in his re-enactment gear. I was on vacation in Williamsburg Va. many years ago when the kids were little and they were have a re-enactment going on there. It was more than just their usual re-enactors, they had them from all over the country to simulate the opening of the general courts, they were even camped on the town commons. The kids loved it. They stayed in character even just walking up and down the streets. You could hear their conversations. It is nice that both he and his wife enjoy it together.

I guess none of us will ever know how much work you have put into this project. We can't say thank you enough......it is truly the lifeline for our class....I'll try to sign into it when I have time to study it.

The graphics are super and shows your talent for finding the right one for each area....something I'm sure not many of us could do or even know how to do. I don't mind leaving comments but I fear if it's the same people all the time, others may feel its only for us...no matter how many times you stress that it is for everyone. Maybe I'm being too sensitive, but I will join in as soon as possible.

Are we past hurricane season in Florida now? I hear there is another one near Aruba somewhere....hope it disappears...
