Dear Rose:

I don't want to "advertise" as much as offer my services to my friends and former classmates who might have children or even grandchildren who are contemplating going to college.

As you probably know, applying to college today can be a very anxious and stressful experience. Having worked in higher education for 43 years and 11 of those years in admissions, I have gained a certain amount of knowledge and experience that could be useful to kids who are applying to college. I am more than happy to share this with them and be their "guide " in a sense as they try to work their way through the application/admissions process.

Of course, if there are others who are looking for a "personal counselor" for this process, I do this on a professional basis for a fee. However, under no circumstances am I looking to solicit business from my friends and classmates. This is an offer of a "free" service from one friend to another.

In Memory of our RHS 62 Classmates-- by Sal Carmosino

As Memorial Day is now upon us, we pause to remember the classmates that are no longer with us.  While we read the many familiar names with shock and sadness, we try to remember the good times that were shared with them in high school and in some cases, long afterward. However, they will always be with us both in our yearbooks, as we gaze at their pictures and signatures wishing us well in the future and in our memories of them.  Hopefully, it will be a comfort to us in future reunions, as they will still be with us in spirit and memory.

Memorial Day is much more than a three-day weekend that marks the beginning of summer.

To many people, especially the nation's thousands of combat veterans, this day which has a history stretching back all the way to the Civil War, is an important reminder of those who died in the service of their country.

Armed Forces Day/May 16, 2009

When : Third Saturday in May

Please salute all of the men and women in all branches of the service who protect our country and you. They can be called upon at a moment's notice to perform a risky and perilous mission for our freedom. They are trained diligently both physically and mentally so they will be prepared to prevail in any mission they face.

Just how did it all begin? On August 31, 1949, the Secretary of Defense, Louis Johnson announced the creation of Armed Forces Day. President Harry Truman also announced the holiday in a presidential proclamation on February 20, 1950. All branches of the military were asked to celebrate on this day and they complied on the first Armed Forces Day which was held the following year on May 20, 1950.

Please take a moment from your day and say a prayer for the men and women (and their families) who have served in the past, and the ones who defend us today.

And don't forget to say Thank You!

Great Shares from Sal Carmosino

On Saturday May 9, 2009, a Mini-Reunion was held at the Mt. Vernon-Wharf Restaurant, North Shore Road in Revere by members of the RHS 1962 class. The date and place was selected to accommodate a visit by our Lantern Blog Editor, classmate and friend, Rose Franciosa Sisti. Rose flew in from Florida and was visiting her family during the Mother's Day weekend.

What started out last year, when Rose visited, as a simple luncheon get together with Sal Carmosino and his wife Carolyn, which eventually attracted 8 former classmates, this year grew to over 20 classmates for yet, another reunion luncheon.

Rose was the first to arrive and was quickly joined by a number of friends at the bar area. Some of the people that came were not at the RHS 2007 Reunion or at last years luncheon. Therefore, we hadn't seen some of them in well over 40 years...or since high school!

Everyone was having such a good time socializing that we simply forgot that we were there to have lunch. One surprise visit melted into another, as more and more people appeared. The poor waitress and even Meri Mastronardi, who was the coordinator for the day, tried to move people into the pre arranged sitting area....to no avail.

Finally, we all moved to the sitting area and tried to figure out who was sitting with who. Once we were settled, Meri read aloud a poem that she had composed to honor Rose for the work she has done with the Lantern blog. It was moving and well deserved and Rose was applauded. An envelope was passed around for voluntary contributions to Rose for any expenses she may have incurred for the Lantern.

What made this event extra special was that several people had major health problems, yet still made a determined effort to attend. Dora DiBartolomeo Vickery has had health problems and had been in and out of the hospital a number of times. Thankfully, she was well enough to come and we were very glad to see her. She was accompanied by her sister Lena and then later picked up by her husband.

Robert Scott [Scotty to his friends] had a stroke only a month ago and no one ever expected him to come, especially driving alone from Maine. Scotty valiantly appeared despite, walking with a cane, a lazy foot and a large bandage on his arm. It was great to see Scotty and also to view his fancy car, we call the Bat-mobile. as it has every gadget in it known to mankind!

This gathering showed that it was more than just a simple luncheon of friends. It showed people who genuinely enjoy being with each other, some making some big time sacrifices to attend. Chuck Beatrice also came a bit later as he left his ailing mother in Intensive Care at a hospital. If Dora, Scotty and Chuck had any reason not to make it, their's were certainly legitimate. Billy Melchionno was on the list to attend but his mother had passed away only last week. Therefore, Billy had obligations to be with his family. Our condolences went out to Billy via the Lantern.

As usual many of us didn't want to leave or have this grand time be over. As is the case for any reunion, one never gets a chance to speak with everyone. However, that fact hopefully whets our appetites to have yet another reunion. These get togethers seem to be an extension of our great class reunion of 2007. Our sincere thanks go to Meri Mastronardi and Diane Screnci Beatrice for organizing this event and contacting the large number of people that were able to attend. It was truly a great day for us all and a wonderful way to honor our classmate and friend Rose.

Since 1962, our little worlds have changed,
Among many other things, new technology reigns.
Though we’ve grown older, and in some cases, apart,
We’ve been able to reconnect and share what’s in our heart,
With dear classmates-friends and acquaintances—of yore.
We’re informed about their lives and we’re “in” on the lore.

Because of you, Rose, and your fabulous Lantern “blog”,
We are updated and entertained and steered out of the fog
About who’s doing what and….well…the who, what, where, why
Of the kids we’ve known and loved from many years gone by.

Your excellent work has clued us in our lives……
Our ups and downs, the high-points, the dives.
We know of the success, the sadness, the woes,
The happiness of some and for others, the lows…
You’ve kept us abreast of the “where are we now”
The “what are we doing and with whom and how”

You’ve worked so hard, and created such a great site
That we can’t imagine being without it, try as we might.
We wouldn’t know half of the things that we do,

Mother's Day!

Mother's Day is celebrated to honor all mothers and express gratitude for the hardships they bear in bringing up a child. Most countries including US, Australia, Canada and India celebrate Mothers Day on the second Sunday of May. Mothers Day came into being due to the efforts made by Ms Julia Ward Howe and Ms Anna Jarvis.

The Resolution for having a dedicated Mother's Day was signed by US President Woodrow Wilson on May 8, 1914. Since then people across the world have been celebrating Mothers Day with joy and devotion and created a Hallmark tradition with great pride!
