I know many of you are new to the idea of a Journal/Blog.......heck, I was unaware of it myself until my daughter introduced it to me last year or so.
Prior to me exploring into Journal/Blogs, I guess I always felt it best to stick to my favorite genre of writing, my weekly Newsletters to my family and friends, because of the assumption that no other format will deliver the same satisfaction for me personally. Then I realized, it was less work for my readers not having to download my Newsletters and I could add moving animations instead of just non animated clip arts.
A Blog is a Website, usually maintained by an individual which in this case would be (me) with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video.
The important part of a Blog is the ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format. So, don't confuse or compare a Blog with the same features that would be to a magazine subscription! Participation is what a Blog is all about. At the bottom of each entry you will see “Add Your Own”….click on that and leave your comment. You can also view recent comments from others in the same location. Write down your password so you won’t forget it. Better still, let the site save your password for you so you won't have to keep putting it in each time you want to leave a comment.
I hope all of the above makes sense to you now.
So, now with all that said: I will begin again to welcome you all to this entry of The Lantern with some new suggestions that I was thrilled to receive from our classmates that emailed me via my suggestion box provided on the Lantern. I'm excited that more of you are starting to participate. Actually, I received six (6) suggestions and/or requests so I thought I would start with three (3) at a time and see how many of you respond……here goes:

Also, very important.....It has been brought to my attention and a request has been made to please leave your name at the bottom of your Comment.....not everyone knows your funkie unusual email address! Our classmate, Frank Vetree emailed me and requested that I place this touching story on The Lantern. I have seen this online before and certainly worth forwarding.
Last week, while traveling to Chicago on business, I noticed a Marine sergeant traveling with a folded flag, but did not put two and two together. After we boarded our flight, I turned to the sergeant, who'd been invited to sit in First Class (across from me), and inquired if he was heading home.
No, he responded.
Heading out I asked?
No. I'm escorting a soldier home.
Going to pick him up?
No. He is with me right now. He was killed in Iraq, I'm taking him home to his family.
The realization of what he had been asked to do hit me like a punch to the gut. It was an honor for him. He told me that, although he didn't know the soldier, he had delivered the news of his passing to the soldier's Family and felt as if he knew them after many conversations in so few days.
I turned back to him, extended my hand, and said, Thank you. Thank you for doing what you do so my family and I can do what we do.
Upon landing in Chicago the pilot stopped short of the gate and made the following announcement over the intercom.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to note that we have had the honor of having Sergeant Steeley of the United States Marine Corps join us on this flight. He is escorting a fallen comrade back home to his family. I ask that you please remain in your seats when we open the forward door to allow Sergeant Steeley to deplane and receive his fellow soldier. We will then turn off the seat belt sign."
Without a sound, all went as requested. I noticed the sergeant saluting the casket as it was brought off the plane, and his action made me realize that I am proud to be an American.
So here's a public Thank You to our military Men and Women for what you do so we can live the way we do.
Red Fridays.
Very soon, you will see a great many people wearing Red every Friday. The reason? Americans who support our troops used to be called the "silent majority." We are no longer silent, and are voicing our love for God, country and home in record breaking numbers. We are not organized, boisterous or overbearing.
Many Americans, like you, me and all our friends, simply want to recognize that the vast majority of America supports our troops. Our idea of showing solidarity and support for our troops with dignity and respect starts this Friday -- and continues each and every Friday until the troops all come home, sending a message that every red-blooded American who supports our men and women afar, will wear something red.
By word of mouth, press, TV -- let's make the United States on every Friday a sea of red much like a home coming football game in the bleachers. If every one of us who loves this country will share this with acquaintances, coworkers, friends, and family, it will not be long before the USA is covered in RED and it will let our troops know the once 'silent' majority is on their side more than ever, certainly more than the media lets on.
The first thing a soldier says when asked 'What can we do to make things better for you?' is. "We need your support and your prayers." Let's get the word out and lead with class and dignity, by example, and wear something red every Friday.
Thank you Frank for submitting such a heartwarming story. Yes, I'm going to wear a Red Shirt on Fridays! How about you? Let's not be part of the "Silent Majority"! If you don't own a red shirt, go out and buy one.

What can I say about my parents . . . a lot!
They are truly the BEST parents, grandparents and in-laws anyone could ask for. My dad comes down from Revere to our house in Scituate every weekend to see one of the kid's games or just to play. My mom comes down once during the week to help me with my house stuff (putting away the laundry is my least favorite chore and she always does it for me). No matter how cold it is out, my dad goes in his pool with my kids.
There is nothing more in the world my kids would rather do than go to "Dee Dee and Pa's" house. My parents, combined with "Nana", my Grandmother Josie, make for a fun trip (with really good food). We vacation annually with them, and my Aunt Sheila and Uncle Richard, to Long Boat Key, Florida and we always have such a wonderful time.
Mom (with her love for shopping) is always buying my kids stuff. I don't even get stressed for back to school shopping for 3 kids because she enjoys doing it. My dad is like a big kid. He loves to just play with the kids, just like he did with me when I was little. He could sit on the floor for hours. As I get older (40 in March - ouch!), I respect my parents more and more.
I strive to be the parents they were to me and I can only hope to be half the grandparents they are to my children. My parents enjoy entertaining their friends and family at their house. The food, fun and cheer is always flowing.
Their love, dedication and generosity to us (and their friends) is endless.

Labor Day differs from the other holidays of the year. All other holidays are in a more or less connected with conflicts and battles of man's prowess over man’s bitter conflict or rivalry and discord for greed and power, of glories achieved by one nation over another.
Did you know that Labor Day is devoted to NO man, living or dead, to no sect, race, or nation?
Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. That means us Baby! We Baby Boomers helped contribute to the strength, prosperity and well-being of our country. We all tolerated some nasty bosses along with way.
I’m happy to report that Diane (Screnci) Beatrice and her lovely sister, Sheila will be visiting me here in South Florida during Labor Day Weekend! I’m looking forward to seeing my dear friends soon.

Sadly, Theresa Falzone passed away and we all miss her. I have fond memories of my personal friendship with her.

More news of interest from Richard Cummings all the way from Germany! He emailed me tons of Revere Beach Postcards that he took a photo of from where your say???? None other than Kelly's on the beach when he was in Mass. in 2002!
I have been trying to post them on The Lantern but reducing the size of the photo distorts the picture as you will notice below. Then Richard sent another photo which also includes his lovely children. I also had to reduce the size of that photo so this site would allow me to upload it......all these complications....making sure I changed them to Jpeg files to do it.
How come I don't remember these beautiful assortment of postcards? I was at Kelly's constantly especially late at night after dancing the night away at the Caravan Club! Even during many freezing cold nights standing in line for those delicious Roast Beef Sandwiches and the best Fried Clams ever! Gosh, is my brain starting to fry?????
What are your memories of these famous Postcards????? Do you remember them?
I asked my daughter if the next time she is in the area to stop and take more photos of these postcards........that is if they are still there on the wall. I know the owners of Kelly's has changed hands several times throughout the years. My talented daughter is an amazing photographer so I hope we will get more photos?
Does anyone actually own any of these old postcards????? I searched the Internet and a man from Stoneham has been collecting postcards of Revere Beach for 50 years! Wow, I wish he posted them online for me to snag!

Hi. I wish I had all those postcards.....I stopped by Kelly's in 2002 for the usual and there on the extreme right side, were the post cards.
These are my four kids...actually Kevin, the boy on the left, has grown to be taller than Nick, the one on the right. And Lea the small girl on the left is now 16 and taller than Sasha on the right. See the post cards? Take care. Rich
By the way, enough time has lapsed and no one has figured out who those adorable kids posted on a previous entry are??? These photos were also sent by Richard. Richard states that the following people are in the photo with the little children from Beachmont: Arthur Maroney, Michael Nappa, Elizabeth Vass and himself .....others in the photo, he can't remember. He was hoping someone would know.
Also, the other two photos were taken by Richard...one of the beautiful view of the Rhine River in Germany. Richard has turned into quite the photographer! Kudos!
