Valentine's Day is a celebrated on February 14th. It is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other by sending Valentine cards, flowers, or offering heart shaped chocolates.
The day is most closely associated with the mutual exchange of love notes in the form of "valentines." Modern Valentine symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten notes have largely given way to mass-produced greeting cards.
Remember in grammar school, we would send those little valentines that came in a package? The were cute! Do the young children in school still do that?
Did you know that the sending of Valentines was a fashion in nineteenth-century Great Britain, and, in 1847, Esther Howland developed a successful business in her Worcester, Massachusetts home with hand-made Valentine cards.

Not only do I remember that 'bag' of multiple little cards, I remember the big decorated box at the front of the class that we deposited our treasured cards. On the 'big'day the teacher would select a few students to deliver the precious mail. Thje anxioity to see if that special someone thought of you...
ReplyDeleteRemembert those fancy paper doilies that we used to makae the homemade cards And to decorate the box?
Happy Valentine's day and joyful memories...
