High Above a Daffodil by Ruth Arvanian Bowler

Super Job

Hi Rose,

In keeping with the theme Richard's daffodil photo and Wordsworth quote, I did this painting a few years ago, and the poem---a lot less classy than the one Richard sent-----is from a long ago episode of The Little Rascals.

I don't know how to post this so I'll leave it to you to post if you'd like. I used to love "The Little Rascals".

High above a daffodil,
I couldn't hardly reach it.
Said I to me, I think I will
Get it for my teacher.
I climbed to reach the daffodil
Out on a limb so thin,
I tumbled down like Jack and Jill
And skinned my little chin.

(from The Little Rascals)

Great Sends-Ruth Bowler.

Great Sends 50s

Hi Rose,

Recently someone gave me a couple of books about Revere, written by a Revere native-----Roland Merullo. Two of his books (there may be more) are about Revere and growing up in the '50's. One is titled Revere Beach Boulevard, and the other Revere: In Those Days. Both books are fiction but sound almost autobiographical.

They are easy reads and very reminiscent of what it was like back then. In one of the books, he writes about growing up on Prospect Ave. Maybe everyone on THE LANTERN is already familiar with them (and I'm just slow discovering them) but if not they might enjoy the books as much as I did.

He Who Dances with Daffodils by Richard Cummings!

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,

They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;

And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

The book is out in print! Richard Cummings

Hi Rose.

My book is out in print. The publisher sent me a copy and said that 58 copies were also sent out on back order, in case anyone ordered one. It should also be available on amazon.com now or soon.

Anyway, this is from the preface. (I got in a word about Revere Beach anyway):

I grew up in the Greater Boston area, never dreaming that I would someday be working in Munich, Germany, in charge of security at an American-sponsored radio station. How I reached that position is a story of fate or luck.

I recall watching black-and-white television commercials on small screens, ads asking for dollars for Radio Free Europe, especially the one in which Ronald Reagan asked for support for the Crusade for Freedom. There were posters in the subway cars traveling in and out of Boston, asking for contributions in support of Radio Free Europe, to be sent to Mt. Vernon, New York. It seemed that every time I went to a Red Sox game, I saw those posters looking down on me. I did not understand then what they meant, but I found them fascinating.

I also remember sitting on Revere Beach with my friends, discussing the television ad for Radio Free Europe, an ad featuring the song “On Broadway.”

Take care. Rich

Peter Zaccone's Ballroom Dance Classes! Sign up now!

DancersHi Rose! Peter Zaccone (one "z", two "c's") is going to start a Ballroom Dancing Class in Revere at the Legion Building and would like some help in alerting our classmates. I wonder if you wouldn't mind sending out a broadcast message to your list of friends in Revere (and environs) about this?

I have to say that Peter is a great teacher and his class is fabulous. How do I know, you may ask? Well, I'm taking one of his classes now at our club. Scott and I and all the rest of the students love it and are enjoying it very much. We've done the foxtrot, promenade, and box step (waltz, etc.) and are looking forward to the cha-cha next week. It is so much fun and entertaining, too.

Anyway, I know he would love to have former classmates involved. I think he said he would start the new class on Wednesday, April 1, but you might want to contact him directly. Thanks, Meri

Hi Meri, Thanks for emailing me about Peter's Ballroom Dance Classes. I sure wish I was living up there now.......I love, love Ballroom dancing! So, I quickly emailed Peter to get more information. Hugs, Rose

Here is Peter's Response:

Hi Rose,

Love the E/mail, I am limited to short and sweet. I have been teaching in Revere for 10 Years, I also have classes in Reading, and I am on the staff of Footloose Dance Studio in Malden which is a competitive studio. I have been certified by NDTA, which allows me to Judge, which I have started to do.

Dancing has opened a whole new world for me, I am out every night.

Message from Robert Scott (Scotty)

Hi Rose,

I talked to the doctor and he said the MRI showed a scar on my brain (I'm surprised he found a brain) but he said that was to be expected. As far as the plaque is concerned that can be treated with either Coumadin or Plavix which are both blood thinners. I have to go see him on Monday.

I'm working hard on my therapy so that I can make it to luncheon on May 9th.

Rose please tell everyone I said thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the prayers and best wishes and I hope to see them on May 9th.

Scotty

Great Send from Richard Cummings

I used to love watching the Burns and Allen television show. In doing research for my next book today, I came across this funny newspaper column of Gracie Allen from 1949.

Gracie Allen Reporting:

Well, I'm still tired from packing for our London and Paris trip. I had to tie up all the trunks with stout ropes while George did the same with his wallet.

George never wants me to take much luggage on a trip because, as an old vaudeville man, he boasts of the days when he not only lived in a trunk but sublet part of it to a midget act.

I wanted to take some canned goods but George said no, we could get plenty to eat over there.

Then I wanted to take my little car, but George said no, we could get plenty of transportation over there.

Then I wanted to take all my cute little hats, but George said no, I could get all I wanted over there.

Then he choked and his face turned purple and I had to beat him on the back and he didn't say another word all evening.

Great Shares from Joanne (Strazzula) McCarthy

Hi Rosie,

A friend sent this to me today. I thought of you and “The Lantern” right away and thought that you may like to post it on “The Lantern”. It is a very touching piece. In fact, it moved me to tears. I hope that it is genuine, but in any case the sentiment is well worth viewing.

I hope that all is well with you. I want to express a long overdue thank you to you for your kindness to post my letter. I received emails from several old friends. I was too devastated to respond at the time, but their kind expressions of love and compassion have been comforting and have helped me to bear the pain of our tragic loss. I thank everyone who responded to your posting, sent emails, spirituals, donations, and masses.

I hope that you enjoy “The Lion”. I’ll be in touch.

Much love,
Joanne

Daylight Savings Time!

Adjusting the clocks to summer time on the last Sunday in March increases the risk of myocardial infarction in the following week. In return, putting the clocks back in the autumn reduces the risk, albeit to a lesser extent, according to research in the New England Journal of Medicine. We are talking the risk of heart attacks here!

So, why do we change the clocks????? Several states do not change their clocks. Any view on this topic? Saving an hour of electricty hardly seems worth the risks.

The American law by which we turn our clock forward in the spring and back in the fall is known as the Uniform Time Act of 1966. The law does not require that anyone observe Daylight Saving Time; all the law says is that if we are going to observe Daylight Saving Time, it must be done uniformly.

Daylight Saving Time has been around for most of this century and even earlier.

For our Irish Friends!

Is there a more Irish city in the United States than South Boston?

St. Patrick's Day week is a fine time to take in the festivities and tour a bit of the city. I searched online for some events taking place in the Boston area to celebrate.

Colorful floats, music and Irish good cheer await you at the City's annual St. Patrick's Day parade. Celebrate Irish heritage in Boston's most Irish neighborhood.

Where to watch the parade begins at the Broadway 'T' Station and ends at Andrew Square, South Boston. Your best bet for viewing the parade is to stake out a spot anywhere along Broadway. St. Patrick's Day Parade Parade starts at 1:00 pm. and will feature marching bands and pipe bands from throughout North America. The parade travels through South Boston - Boston's most Irish neighborhood. Since 1901 this parade has become a prominent part of South Boston's history.

Southie's annual wearin' of the green steps off from the Broadway T Stop proceeding down West Broadway to East Broadway to East 4th, to 5th Street, and around Thomas Park. Marchers continue to Telegraph Street to Dorchester Street ending at Andrew Square.

Additional St. Patrick's Day Parades - 2009

Abington: March 15, 1:00 p.m.
Boston: March 15, 1:00 pm
Cape Cod Parade: March 7, 11:00 am
Holyoke: March 22, 11:50 am
Lawrence: March 8, 1:00 pm
Manchester, NH: March 22, Noon
Scituate: March 15, 1:00 p.m.
Worcester: March 8, Noon
Dublin, Ireland: March 17, Noon

Places to visit after the Parade Stroll Boston's Irish Heritage Trail: South Boston is often called the capital of Irish America because of its thriving Irish community, which dates back to colonial times and continues to the present day. The Irish Heritage Trail is a self-guided, three mile walking tour that takes you through Boston's downtown, North End, Beacon Hill and Back Bay.

You'll learn about famous politicians, artists, matriarchs and war heroes, part of a rich tradition of rebellion, leadership and triumph that personifies the Boston Irish. (617) 696-9880.
