We have classmates that have been looking for you.

So excited to receive Meri's email this morning which included both your emails so you can enjoy being added to The Lantern that I created and maintain for our class.

You both will have some catching up to do. I suggest starting with the day of inception of this Blog for RHS Class of 62. Look at the sidebar on the right and click on the year of 2008 and enjoy going through month by month. I started the the Journal/Blog in June of 2008. Remember to view the comments at the bottom of each entry. Use your arrow buttons above to get you back to the previous or next page. Or at the bottom of the page, it will indicate do you wish to view older posts or go back to the newer posts. You will find your way around easy enough. If you need help, I'm always here if you get stuck.

If you have a story you would love to share or pictures too. We have a Lantern Photo/Shop that I have created separate albums for anyone who chooses to have one.

At the bottom of each Entry, you will notice the words "Comments". You may click on that to leave a comment for our classmates to see. If you do not have a google account, you may leave a comment using the anonymous button but please remember to leave your name inside the comment so we know who you are. Or you can create an account if you choose. It only takes seconds...just remember to jot down your username and password.

Blogger.com will only allow me to use 10 emails to receive comments as they come in automatically. I wish I could put everyone's email address in there but I can't. I try to email everyone and let them know when a new Entry has been made and/or comments.

Just keep checking on the site periodically and most of all enjoy!

Oh....Barb....just the other day Anne Farrell emailed us and said she and Jack were watching a Celtics game and they saw you on TV at the game! How cool is that. You can take a look and Anne and Jack's Album on the Lantern as well.

Happy Valentine's Day to my Forever Friends!

Valentine's Day is a celebrated on February 14th. It is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other by sending Valentine cards, flowers, or offering heart shaped chocolates.

The day is most closely associated with the mutual exchange of love notes in the form of "valentines." Modern Valentine symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten notes have largely given way to mass-produced greeting cards.

Remember in grammar school, we would send those little valentines that came in a package? The were cute! Do the young children in school still do that?

Did you know that the sending of Valentines was a fashion in nineteenth-century Great Britain, and, in 1847, Esther Howland developed a successful business in her Worcester, Massachusetts home with hand-made Valentine cards.

In the News today: Sully!

HERO of the Hudson, C.B. "Sully" Sullenberger III, is a former fighter pilot, 29-year veteran of US Airways.

Capt. Sullenberger, 57, won praise from passengers and their loved ones for his cool-headed heroism acting upon quick decision on the Hudson River.

He not only saved the 155 passengers on US Airways flight 1549, he spared New York City widespread by steering the doomed aircraft away from densely populated Manhattan.

God surely was with Sully, his crew and passengers that day! A blogger friend of mine found this great graphic!

A prosperous Merchant-Sal Carmosino

"A prosperous merchant of the 18th Century at a gentlemen's business reception"

As you can see, colonial clothing is Sal's hobby.........Sal informed me that when he is around other serious re-enactors, they are always checking out each others clothes...its a learning experience. Sal knew when he was an extra in some movies that his clothing would pass Hollywoods close inspection, as he takes his interest in re-enacting very seriously.

Sal did a study of men's 18th Century clothing years ago. Sal states "The trend among re-enactors is that if we were to play these roles, we should look as best as we can, with correct styles and not like Halloween cheap "costumes", a word we never use."

I personally emailed Sal to inquire about the 18th Century clothing because of my personal interest in Fashion Designing. I was amazed with the extreme detail to all the clothing with the covered buttons, the lace, the cloaks, the custom fit. They surely must have had the best seamstresses in those days!

Prayer Request

I just received this email from Joanne Strazzula McCarthy and I want everyone to pray for her and her family and let her know that we are so sorry to hear about her terrible loss:

Dear Friends,

It is with great sadness and sorrow that I am writing this letter to you. I want to inform you of the tragic death of our beloved three and one-half year old grandson Ronan. I know that I will find it overwhelming to speak with each of you and tell you this awful news on the telephone, as I wish I could. So, I chose this path as the easiest for me at this time.

As most of you know, Ronan was being treated for Cystic Fibrosis and was doing wonderfully well. He was living an active and normal childhood and was an absolutely happy and loving child. He was so excited about the joy of Christmas and Santa coming to his house. He had picked up a stomach bug that had been going around his pre-school class and was home for a couple of days. He rallied and after a couple of days returned to school. His mom went to the school a couple of times a day to dispense his enzymes, which he needed as a normal part of his CF routine. On her second visit that day, he seemed quite tired and she thought it best to bring him home. Well, he become worse and was brought to Children’s Hospital at Orange County (CHOC) where his condition quickly worsened and despite the best of care that he received there, doctors could not save him. It appears that his death was not due to Cystic Fibrosis and at this time, we do not know the cause of death.

Mike and I immediately flew out on the 19th and returned on Sunday, the 28th. The viewing was held on December 22, followed by a prayer service at the funeral home chapel. The funeral mass was held on December 23 at St. Cecilia’s Church in Tustin, California. My grandsons, Ronan’s brothers, Michael and Thomas, attend St. Cecilia’s School. Ronan was not a student there yet, but he was known and loved by everyone there. The St. Cecilia school community pulled together to support Michael and Eileen and the entire family. They took charge of everything and acted with such indescribable love and support. People sent food to the house; a dear friend was by Michael and Eileen’s side assisting them in planning the wake and funeral and was with them throughout every detail. The parents, students, teachers, priests, pastor, and principal of St. Cecilia’s all took loving and active parts in the funeral. All of his doctors and nurses from the CF Clinic were there as well.

The pastor of St. Cecilia’s Church, a parish priest from St Cecilia, and the pastor of St. John Neumann’s Church (which is Eileen and Michael’s neighborhood parish) concelebrated the funeral Mass. The principal of the school spoke beautiful words of Ronan and his family and how important and integral they were to all of them. She spoke of the joy and love that was Ronan and how he was an “angel that walked among us” and spread this love and joy to all that knew him. Many beautiful words were spoken that helped to soothe the deep pain of all of us.

Following the funeral the friends at St. Cecilia hosted a reception attended by a few hundred people. The friends set up the church hall and provided an extensive array of food for everyone. They also had compiled a beautiful slide show set to Ronan’s favorite songs entitled “A Tribute to Ronan McCarthy”. It was beautiful and showed his life and the interaction that he had with family and dear friends in his too brief like.

Indeed, Ronan lived a too brief life, but he touched more people in his short time on earth than some do in a long lifetime. The memory of his love and joy is an inspiration to all of us. We thank God for His gift of Ronan.
