Great Send from Diane Screnci Beatrice!

This year we will experience four unusual dates:

1/1/11, 1/11/11, 11/1/11, and 11/11/11.

Now..go figure this out----take the last two digits of the year you were born, plus the age you will be THIS year and it will equal 111.

It works for everyone!

Diane

Email just received from Scotty!

Hi Rose,
Just would like to let you know what is going on with my health. The visiting nurses have been coming to the house and they have been concerned that my temperature has been going up. They have been talking with my doctor and they may have to put me back in the hospital.

It seems that I'm not getting better like I hoped, but I won't give up the fight just yet. I'm very tired and very weak. They think I'm still fighting septic shock infection. So I'm still pretty sick.     Scotty

Prayer Request for Linda (Spagnolo) Lattanzi's husband, Peter

A Prayer Request is needed for Linda (Spagnolo) Lattanzi's husband, Peter. I just received a telephone call that they are allowing Peter to go home today from the rehab. He is in such fragile condition and has gone through so much for such a very long time being in and out of hospitals, surgeries and rehabs.

I strongly believe in the power of prayers. Please pray for Peter and also for our dear friend and classmate, Linda. Linda will need nurses coming to her house for assistance. I don't believe she has 5 minutes for herself. She is so devoted to Peter and is such a wonderful person.

I have requested prayers for Peter in the past, however, he needs more prayers now more than ever!

Linda, I wish I lived closer to help out whether it be do some errands for you or cook some meals for you..........I feel so helpless living in another state.  Should you need anything, please let me know.  I'm sure our wonderful friends that live close by will be more than happy to help out anyway they can.  We are here for you!  I know that Diane & Chuckie and John Henry and others has been by your side to help you.  Others will love to help too.  Just let us know what you need.

With Affection, Rose

Message from Fred Ciampi

Rose,

Thank you and all of my classmates for your kind thoughts and prayers. It has been a very trying time. My son faced his battle with cancer valiantly. He never complained and was strong throughout his treatments. He was in a lot of pain and suffered terribly at the end. Young Fred is in a better place, but we miss him terribly.

I want to thank Sal & Carolyn Carmosino and Floy (Bright) Johnson for joining Our family and Fred's' friends at our Celebration of his Life.

Jean and I have returned to Tampa. We are slowly getting our lives back to normal.

Update - Email just received from Sal Carmosino!

OK... The Cardiologist was great!  Unfortunately my primary doctor's office sent this guy nothing from my previous visits there and the reports from the hospital....I wasn't too happy about that....and if I ever go back to him..I will certainly let him know about it.

So, I had to go in there cold.  Fortunately, I keep everything and I had all of the ER reports from the 3 times I was there.

So, he saw the reports...examined me thoroughly and concluded that the pain did not come from the aneurysm. Also he said the ER's diagnosis was premature. What I have is an enlarged Aortic blood vessel, that if not treated will turn into an aneurysm...so in effect, it's a pre-aneurysm. I was elated at that news.....

He also said that my previous BP medication Diovan 160mg was not enough to lower my BP. Even if I doubled it , he said it still wouldn't be enough. He then set me up for more testing next week...a Stress Test, an Echocardiogram and possibly an Angiogram to check for possible artery blockage.

This is the information and the plan I was looking for. He said since the pain is not related to the heart, we have to find the source.  I know I'm still not out of the woods yet, but at least we're on the right path to find an answer....and take care of it which makes me feel better. The nodule is barely a dot and will still be looked at in 6 months...not 3. He was annoyed that the ER took two CT Scans in three weeks which is excessive radiation.

My test is scheduled for next Tuesday and then again Mon Jan 31. I like that he s getting right to it instead of waiting. He also gave me an electronic BP monitor to use at home for 10 days. He wants me to chart the readings and bring them back to him.....my kind of guy.

His monitor shows my BP good so far....so I'm not sure about this Diovan not being enough...but that will be his call. But I was very impressed with him and everyone was right.....I needed Cardiologist....he was so professional and no guessing about what he wants to do to find the answer....I asked about the location of the problem area. He said it was in the upper chest. the Scan didn't check the stomach area. So he pressed and pushed and determined that the stomach wasn't a problem area.

But this was only a preliminary exam since I was seeing him for the first time. He concluded that we can make a final determination after all the testing is done...and he will prescribe a different medication.  Overall, I felt very good leaving there and I cant wait for the tests so we can get going on a treatment. I know all of our classmates are interested in my status and I do appreciate the support.

New subject:  Carolyn and I are going to the memorial service for Fred Ciampi's son tomorrow in Watertown, MA.  I was wondering if any of our classmates would be going. I hope so.....Strong as he seems, Fred needs the support from everyone especially losing a son so young at age 38.....

Retire Where? Here are some of your choices:

RETIRE WHERE? Here are some of your choices:

You can retire to Phoenix , Arizona where...

1. You are willing to park 3 blocks away because you found shade.
2. You've experienced condensation on your hiney from the hot water in the toilet bowl.
3. You can drive for 4 hours in one direction and never leave town.
4. You have over 100 recipes for Mexican food.
5. You know that "dry heat" is comparable to what hits you in the face when you open your oven door.
6. The 4 seasons are: tolerable, hot, really hot, and ARE YOU KIDDING ME??!!

OR

You can retire to California where...

1. You make over $250,000 and you still can't afford to buy a house.
2. The fastest part of your commute is going down your driveway.
3. You know how to eat an artichoke.
4. You drive your rented Mercedes to your neighborhood block party.
5. When someone asks you how far something is, you tell them how long it will take to get there rather than how many miles away it is.
6. The 4 seasons are: Fire, Flood, Mud, and Drought.

MAYBE

You can retire to New York City where...

1. You say "the city" and expect everyone to know you mean Manhattan .
2. You can get into a four-hour argument about how to get from Columbus Circle to Battery Park, but can't find Wisconsin on a map.
3. You think Central Park is "nature."
4. You believe that being able to swear at people in their own language makes you multi-lingual.
5. You've worn out a car horn. (Ed. Note if you have a car).
6. You think eye contact is an act of aggression.

OR THERE IS THIS

You can retire to Minnesota where...

1. You only have four spices: salt, pepper, ketchup, and Tabasco .
2. Halloween costumes fit over parkas.
3. You have more than one recipe for casserole.
4. Sexy lingerie is anything flannel with less than eight buttons.
5. The four seasons are: winter, still winter, almost winter, and construction.

MAYBE EVEN THIS

You can retire to the Deep South where...

1. You can rent a movie and buy bait in the same store.
2. "Y'all" is singular and "all y'all" is plural.
3. "He needed killin" is a valid defense.
4. Everyone has 2 first names: Billy Bob, Jimmy Bob, Mary Sue, Betty Jean, Mary Beth, etc.
5. Everything is either "in yonder," "over yonder" or "out yonder." It's important to know the difference, too.

OR COULD YOU

retire to Colorado where...

1. You carry your $3,000 mountain bike atop your $500 car.
2. You tell your husband to pick up Granola on his way home and so he stops at the day care center.
3. A pass does not involve a football or dating.
4. The top of your head is bald, but you still have a pony tail.

OR maybe

You can retire to the Midwest where...

1. You've never met any celebrities, but the mayor knows your name.
2. Your idea of a traffic jam is ten cars waiting to pass a tractor.
3. You have had to switch from "heat" to "A/C" on the same day.
4. You end sentences with a preposition: "Where's my coat at?"
5. When asked how your trip was to any exotic place, you say, "It was different!"

THEN there's this

FINALLY You can retire to Florida where.

1. You eat dinner at 3:15 in the afternoon.
2.. All purchases include a coupon of some kind -- even houses and cars.
3. Everyone can recommend an excellent dermatologist.
4. Road construction never ends anywhere in the state.
5. Cars in front of you often appear to be driven by headless people.

Great Send from Joanne (Struz) McCarthy!

Hi Rosie,
I know that “our gang” will enjoy this letter. As Maurice Chevalier once said, “Ah…I remember it well!

Joanne M

Read if you are from Boston.

Dear Santa,

This year all I want for Christmas is for you to take me back in time about 45 years so I can once again experience the thrill of the sights, sounds, gaiety, and hustle and bustle of downtown Boston as it was in the 1950's and 1960s.

I don’t need any money, I just need for you to re-wind time so I can run into S.S. Pierce to buy a few jellies or jams, walk through R.H. Stearn’s — or was it R.H. White’s? — and have a moment to stop to buy flowers from the vendor outside of the subway stop on Winter Street. I always meant to do that, but never did.

I’d also like to go to the original Windsor Button Shop on Chauncey Street to find a replacement button for my favorite coat and resist the urge to buy a new one at either Raymond’s or Conrad & Chandler’s instead.. Also, having the opportunity to buy something at the Jordan Marsh basement store on “Dollar Day,” or to once again see my aunt standing behind her counter selling Van Raalte lingerie would mean so much.

Please, Santa, if only for a moment it would be fun to return to the afternoon I met my girlfriends — where else but under the clock at Filene’s on the corner of Washington and Summer Streets — and once again laugh with them as heartily as we did when we invaded I.J. Fox to try on fur coats none of us could afford to buy. At the time we barely had enough money to go to the lunch counter at Kresge’s, Neisner’s or Woolworth’s for a hot dog, let alone to buy a mink. If we could do it again, I wonder if any one of us could — or would want to — purchase one of those now politically incorrect fur coats.

It would be nice, too, if before Christmas Day, instead of standing outside to meet someone, I could walk into Filene’s, get on the escalator and as the scent of the perfumes on the street floor fade away, have one more chance to look down at the breathtaking view below. The twinkling white lights wrapped around shimmering garland hanging in perfect loops from the tin ceiling and the decorated Christmas trees at every counter were more beautiful than anything I’d ever seen before or since. You were there, Santa. Do you remember that sight?

I don ’t want to appear greedy, but most of all I’d love to relive the evening I met up with my steady boyfriend — now husband — on the corner of Temple Place and Washington Street .

On that night in December 1965, we went down to Filene’s Basement and bought toys for our nieces and nephews. After we loaded up his car, which was parked on Temple Place in front of the branch of the First National Bank where he worked, we went up to Tremont Street and walked through the lighted Boston Common trying to decide where to have dinner. I’m a little fuzzy as to where we went, but I’m pretty sure it was either Dini’s on Tremont Street , or Café Marliave on Bromfield Street .

I know for certain that we didn’t go to Locke-Ober’s because, as you must remember, Santa, in those days unless Harvard won a home game against Yale, women were excluded from the main dining room. However, where we had dinner doesn’t matter because even though it was cold and snowy, we ended our evening at Bailey’s to devour ice cream and hot fudge from not only an overflowing sundae cup, but from the silver tray underneath it as well.

If you can pull any of this off, I promise I won’t leave the past without bringing home either a blueberry muffin from Jordan Marsh or a couple of the famous almond macaroon cookies baked on-site at Gilchrist’s. Further, while I’m back in time I swear to you that when I drop a coin into the slot to release the latch holding the shopping bags at the entrances to most of the stores, I’ll be nice and not naughty. As tempting as it still may be, this time around I’ll make sure my sticky fingers take only one.

Work your magic, Santa, because although I know I can go to Jordan’s Furniture to see the Enchanted Village, I’d rather take my grandchildren to its birthplace; the Jordan Marsh department store in downtown Boston.

Realistically, if I’m asking for too much, perhaps the next time I see you at a mall you could give me a wink and a nod just to confirm that you got my letter and that you too believe it was a wonderful life!

Merry Christmas and thank you.

Scotty just called me!

Scotty just called me!

I have been unable to reach Scotty for quite some time.  He has been in the hospital since December 22nd and when they transferred him to another hospital, that is when I lost track of him.  He just got home last Friday.  And today he read my emails on his computer.

He has been very ill since his last stroke and developed a severe infection.  He also has Crone's Desease, Kidney Disease, he is retaining lots of fluid.  The recent MRI shows he now has MS.

So, let's all keep Scotty in our prayers for a speedy recovery.  He is now home and visiting nurses come in and a neighbor across the road checks up on him.  He also has a brother that lives nearby and he has been there to see him as well.

Scotty was sad to hear about Sal's medical issues and Fred's son battling with cancer.

I know you are reading this Scotty!  Get Well Darling!  We are all praying for you!
Hugs, Rose & the Lantern Gang!
P.S.  To my special Forever Friends..........we have some heavy duty praying going on for our dear friends.  I know you all are busy but throw in a few extra prayers for Scotty, Sal & Fred and his family.

Great Shares from Joanne Struz McCarthy!

A "skit" from one of Red Skelton's 1969 T.V. shows... WOW.....just think about it, he said this on his T.V. show in 1969 and had no clue his words would ever come to fruition. SAD, isn't it?

What a wonderful and worthwhile clip to watch and share with all your friends and acquaintances, especially the younger generation!

Prayers for Fred Ciampi's son and his family!

Fred called me on the phone when he read the Prayer Request for Sal.  Fred had a lot bearing down on his shoulders, as Fred's son has the same cancer that Fred himself conquered but his son wasn't as lucky.

Fred considers Sal one of his dearest friends and that pushed him off the edge with the news of Sal's recent diagnosis with an aneurysm, as Fred's son was his main focus at the time but Fred still took the time to call Sal on the phone and called me afterwards.

Our dear friend, Fred Ciampi is leaving for Boston Friday night.  His son, young Fred has taken a turn for the worst and at the end of his battle with cancer is approaching very soon.

Fred said he would be in touch with me via the Internet while in Boston.

You are in my thoughts and prayers my dear friend.

Update on Sal Carmosino from Rose!

I received an email from Sal today.  He states he feels like he is in limbo right now...and has to play the waiting game...He is hoping his Primary Care doctor is right and it turns out to be something he can live with but monitored.

I personally feel he should contact a Cardiologist, they are the heart Specialists.

Sal wants to thank all of you and still wants your prayers to continue.  He is concerned and depressed that something has to happen before anyone does anything and he does not want to wait for an emergency.  He expressed that he still needs that positive energy that everyone gave him, as the waiting game is draining him.

So, I ask all of you to join me and continue our prayers for our dear friend, as I don't want his depression to take over.  Positive thoughts are necessary along with the right decisions.  He is not feeling comfortable right now with his Primary Care doctor.

Forwarding message just received from Joanne (Struz) McCarthy!

Hi Rosie,

I hope you had a great day today. I am sure that the many birthday wishes posted on The Lantern brought joy to you.

I have two items of interest share with you. First, I received an email today that Gert Grady, former “Junior High” teacher and later Assistant Principal of the McKinley School passed away the morning of January 1, 2011.She was 98 years old. She was a lovely woman and a good teacher. I know that many of the followers of The Lantern attended the McKinley and were among her students.

I remember Miss Grady well as a History teacher and McKinley Junior High Drama Club Advisor. In fact, I recall being in a play at the holidays under her direction. I don’t remember the name of the play (I bet Sal will!), but I was “Aunt Emily”, George Manzo was “Santa Claus” and Vicki Calla was a main character. There were others, but I can’t recall them. I loved being in the play and have such fond memories of those days. In fact, when I was teaching, I was awarded a grant to reinstitute the Drama Club at McKinley. I did direct a play and it was a wonderful experience for the students and even a better one for me. I thought that you may want to share this information about Miss Grady with The Lantern Gang.

Secondly, I attended a wake tonight and ran into Paul Trunfio and his wife Mary Williams there. We chatted for a while and the subject of our last reunion came up. They did not attend the last reunion and I told them how wonderful it was. I mentioned The Lantern Blog and told him some of the latest news. I suggested that he check it out. He said he was on the site once a long time ago. I promised to send him the address and I think we will soon see him joining the Forever Friends.

That’s all for now, Rosie. Be warm in Florida! It’s 29 degrees here!

Joanne M

Announcement from Rose: I just received this update from Sal this evening.

Copy of email received from Sal with update regarding his doctor's appointment

8:15pm 3 Jan.....OK here is the latest..... after having a an afternoon filled with anxiety before my doctors appointment I finally saw him.  I was annoyed that he didn't have the ER report as to what had transpired...so he went to get a copy.....we went over it.  He then called the Pulmonologist to see if the nodule had to be biopsied. The P-gist said its too small for a biopsy.. and since I was never a smoker it is in a very low risk situation right now.

However, he wants me to have another Ct Scan in 3 mos.  If its the same...another Ct Scan in 6 mos...and evaluate the situation then......that made me feel better.

Regarding the Aneurysm....the concern number is 5.5 cm s...mine was 4.0.....also a very narrow, almost a pre-aneurysm....Also to be included in the 3 month Ct Scan to check both. The doctor spoke with the heart surgeon and that was his recommendation.........no need for a Cardiologist right now...

In 3 mos, if situation changes...a Cardiologist will be recommended. The wait from 2pm to now when he called me back was nerve wracking.

I just got off the phone with the doctor...so I feel much better overall...altho I wouldn't have minded being in the care of a Cardio. He said the Cardio wouldn't be telling me anything different right now. Plus these things are very slow growing...if they grow at all...hence the 3 month wait.......I didn't want to argue with my doctor cuz he knows how nervous I get...which may or may not be a good thing.....as he thinks I overreact....but I have to have a peace of mind and a thorough explanation before I am comfortable......another reason the P/A is sometimes better as she listens and gives me exact information.......So I do feel better...but still have to be monitored....which is OK  and actually better that they will be checking it. The doctor did change and increased my BP meds to get the pressure lower... as its still high......so we ll see what happens with that in 1 month.

I still have to go to the gym which I wondered about too much stress on my heart...but he said just the opposite...but not to strain myself with heavy objects and overdo things ....I can see that I will be buried with medical bills soon...I am so tired of medical appointments and bills...but I have no choice.

I could feel the spiritual energy after he told me that...I am sure, thanks to everyone's support....which I still  need...and really appreciate....I kept reading the support messages over and over again today to give me strength...which they did....and kept repeating them over and over again in mind as I drove to the doctor's office.

That's the latest....and I cant help feeling better about the overall situation even though now, I am no longer as healthy as I once was... but then again, who is?

As a courtesy, please inform our classmates of my good news even though its still a serious condition to be watched.  Please tell them also, that I was constantly thinking of them and their great messages as they were thinking of me....I could never have gone through this alone......

God bless everyone......

Sal

Great Shares from Arthur Buonapane!

Rose:

I was cleaning out my emails today and came across this one that someone sent me in 2007. You may have read this before and maybe so have some of our classmates but I think it's worth sending out if you agree. It still brings a lump in my throat and even a tear in my eyes.

We should all remember this story and perhaps if the world did we would all be better off.  I guess I kept it for a reason and I still will.

Arthur

What goes around comes around!

He almost didn't see the old lady, stranded on the side of the road, but even in the dim light of day, he could see she needed help. So he pulled up in front of her Mercedes and got out. His Pontiac was still sputtering when he approached her.

Even with the smile on his face, she was worried. No one had stopped to help for the last hour or so. Was he going to hurt her? He didn't look safe; he looked poor and hungry.  He could see that she was frightened, standing out there in the cold.  He knew how she felt.. It was that chill which only fear can put in you.

He said, "I'm here to help you, ma'am. Why don't you wait in the car where it's warm? By the way, my name is Bryan Anderson."  Well, all she had was a flat tire, but for an old lady, that was bad enough. Bryan crawled under the car looking for a place to put the jack, skinning his knuckles a time or two. Soon he was able to change the tire. But he had to get dirty and his hands hurt.

As he was tightening up the lug nuts, she rolled down the window and began to talk to him. She told him that she was from St. Louis and was only just passing through. She couldn't thank him enough for coming to her aid. Bryan just smiled as he closed her trunk. The lady asked how much she owed him. Any amount would have been all right with her. She already imagined all the awful things that could have happened had he not stopped. Bryan never thought twice about being paid. This was not a job to him. This was helping someone in need, and God knows there were plenty, who had given him a hand in the past. He had lived his whole life that way, and it never occurred to him to act any other way.

He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person the assistance they needed, and Bryan added, "And think of me."  He waited until she started her car and drove off. It had been a cold and depressing day, but he felt good as he headed for home, disappearing into the twilight.

A few miles down the road the lady saw a small cafe. She went in to grab a bite to eat, and take the chill off before she made the last leg of her trip home. It was a dingy looking restaurant. Outside were two old gas pumps. The whole scene was unfamiliar to her. The waitress came over and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet hair. She had a sweet smile, one that even being on her feet for the whole day couldn't erase. The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant, but she never let the strain and aches change her attitude. The old lady wondered how someone who had so little could be so giving to a stranger. Then she remembered Bryan.

After the lady finished her meal, she paid with a hundred dollar bill. The waitress quickly went to get change for her hundred dollar bill, but the old lady had slipped right out the door. She was gone by the time the waitress came back. The waitress wondered where the lady could be. Then she noticed something written on the napkin .

There were tears in her eyes when she read what the lady wrote: "You don't owe me anything. I have been there too. Somebody once helped me out, the way I'm helping you. If you really want to pay me back, here is what you do: Do not let this chain of love end with you."

Under the napkin were four more $100 bills. Well, there were tables to clear, sugar bowls to fill, and people to serve, but the waitress made it through another day. That night when she got home from work and climbed into bed, she was thinking about the money and what the lady had written. How could the lady have known how much she and her husband needed it? With the baby due next month, it was going to be hard....She knew how worried her husband was, and as he lay sleeping next to her, she gave him a soft kiss and whispered soft and low, "Every thing is going to be all right. I love you, Bryan Anderson."

There is an old saying "What goes around comes around." Today, I sent you this story, and I'm asking you to pass it on .. Let this light shine. Don't delete it. Please pass this on to a friend. Good friends are like stars....You don't always see them, but you know they are always there.

Arthur, thank you for the great send, I loved it.  It's a "Keeper"!
